I’m delighted to say that these past few months have been very busy with lots of exciting performances coming up before Christmas.

Myself and Kristyn Fontanella have been awarded Dance Ireland’s Mentored Residency in Traditional Dance under world-renowned dance artist and performer Colin Dunne.

Kristyn and I met on the MA Contemporary Dance program at UL this year and having had Colin as a tutor at different times throughout the year, we felt we would benefit from his experience in performance-making.

The aim of this residency is to explore the connections between the established styles in traditional dance (step dance and sean-nós dance) as well as finding a new language of material to traditional music. We are looking at sean-nós and step dancing from different perspectives and finding ways in which we can create new choreography which is unique to us as traditional/contemporary dancers. We are working closely with traditional music and using different choreographic methods such as text and improvisation. We aim to show our finding at the end of our residency at DancHouse on Friday 5 December. Stay tuned for details but in the meantime here’s a short clip of the exploration so far:

I received a second residency from Dance Ireland to develop new contemporary choreographic work with Olwyn Lyons. We have made a short work in progress which incorporates live dance and digital projection. Our initial stimulus for the project was ‘restriction’ and we have moved through several creative stages using props and choreographic tools such as Laban’s intrinsic strands. We performed the piece for the first time at Echo Echo Festival of Dance and Movement in Derry as part of an open call for short works. We were delighted with the response and we are continuing to create and develop with a short dance residency at The Axis Theatre in Ballymun during the month of November.

We will perform the piece next at Dance Theatre of Ireland’s ‘Creating Space‘ on Sunday 7 December at 3.30. Here are a few images from our stay in Derry:

I’m running a summer sean-nós dance course for adults in Rathgar on Wednesday evenings. Click on the following link for details: Summer sean-nós leaflet

I’m just home from Seville, Spain where I had the wonderful opportunity of performing sean-nós in the stunning open air venue, CICUS Arts Center, for two nights.

On the first night I performed with ‘Stolen Notes’ a local Irish traditional music group, who I was amazed to hear had reached a level of virtuosity by learning tunes on the internet and at local sessions.

On the second night I performed with the extremely talented sean-nós singer, Lillis O Laoire, and musicians Fiachna O Mongáin from Co. Mayo and Tara Ní Chonacháin from Co. Donegal. Having never performed with these artists, I was surprised at how quickly we made a musical connection and how well everybody seemed to gel. There was certainly some sort of magic in the air that night and it’ll be a very difficult gig to top!

The people of Seville are so welcoming and friendly and we were very well looked after during our stay. I was captivated by the all the music in the streets and at the flamingo bars and I hope to make another trip soon.

Thanks to Antonio Rivero Taravillo for being a great host!

Wow, it’s been pretty quiet around here for quite some time ay? Sorry about that! Here’s an update:

Over the next few months I’ll be working on my final semester project for my MA in Contemporary Dance. This will be a film project merging different elements I’ve studied over the course of the year. It has been an amazing experience studying in UL, I can’t believe it’s coming to an end!

I presented a program for TG4 on Siansa Gael-Linn a few weeks ago. It was a great experience and was delighted with the outcome – you can have a peek at the promo below:

I’ve now moved back to Dublin and am looking to start running some regular sean-nós classes (finally!) so let me know if you’re interested in signing up. Also, if you’re a fan of the aul social media go ahead and connect with me on Twitter (@sibealelena) and on Instagram (@sibealdavitt).

Here’s an oldie of me doing the ‘sean-nós crab’ a few summers ago at Electric Picnic. Hoping to throw a few shapes and hit a few trad festivals this summer too…yyeeoooww!

Join me for a series of sean-nós dance workshops in the heart of Dublin city next week on Tuesday 17 and Thursday 19 December 2013.

I’ll be teaching sean-nós dance steps with a modern twist, offering students the opportunity to kick loose and move freely to the music. All are welcome to Club Chonradh na Gaeilge, 6 Harcourt Street, Dublin 2 for a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

Starting with a short warm up to get the heart rate up, this workshop will a provide a basic lesson in traditional rhythm as well as a good physical workout – no prior experience necessary. €10 admission.

Thursday’s workshops will take place at the same times. The material will follow on from the steps learned on Tuesday but complete beginners are welcome to the 7.15 session. There will be special rates for all 4 workshops.

Due to the amazing turnout I had for both sean-nós dance workshops last week at Club Chonradh na Gaeilge, 6 Harcourt Street, Dublin 2, I’ve decided to run another night this Friday, 23 August 2013, at the same time and venue.

I noticed some serious talent in both classes and would like to explore the steps in greater detail. If you feel you’d like to take a step up from the beginner’s class, I would suggest you give the improvers class a try, even if last week was your first lesson. If you feel you would benefit from a recap of the basic steps, I’d stick to the beginner’s class.

Here are the details:

The evening will kick off at 6pm with an hour-long intensive workshop for improvers. Participants must have prior experience and should be willing to dance solo. This workshop will cover more advanced reel steps as well as more complex rhythmic ornamentation. €10 admission.

From 7.15pm – 8.45pm I’ll be going back to basics for a beginner’s workshop. Starting with a short warm up to get the heart rate up, this workshop will a provide a basic lesson in traditional rhythm as well as a good physical workout – no prior experience necessary. €12 admission.

Although both workshops will be taught bilingually, participants are not required to speak Irish. Spaces are very limited so please make sure to reserve a place by e-mailing sibeal.davitt@gmail.com. Please arrive 15 mins early to prepare for the class.

De bharr éilimh mhóir, tá an cinneadh glactha agam tuilleadh ceardlanna damhsa ar an sean-nós a reáchtáil Dé hAoine beag seo, 23 Lúnasa 2013, ag Club Chonradh na Gaeilge, 6 Sráid Fhearchair, Baile Átha Cliath 2.

Bhí mé an-tógtha le caighdeán ard na ndamhsóirí a bhí i láthair an tseachtain seo caite agus is mian liom na scileanna sin a fhorbairt níos mó.

Seo iad na sonraí:

Cuirfear tús leis an oíche le ceardlann d’fheabhóirí ag 6 – 7i.n. Ardrang aclaíochta a bheidh i gceist leis seo ina ndíreofar ar chéimeanna níos casta agus ar ornáidíocht rithime. Ceardlanna dátheangacha a bheidh i gceist agus ní bheifear ag súil le cumas ard Gaeilge. Beidh teorainn le líon na spásanna sna ceardlanna mar sin ní mór r-phost a chur chuig sibeal.davitt@gmail.com le spás a chur in áirithe.
